Every summer they come back — reliable, unhurried, unannounced. Three daylilies on one stem, each facing a slightly different direction, as though sorting out the light between them. The petals hold a deep chrome yellow, almost orange at the throat, where dark-tipped stamens curl inward. A fourth bud waits just behind, still sealed. Against the near-black background, the flowers don't so much bloom as ignite.
