A lone rock islet crowned with conifers stands its ground against the Pacific swell along Ucluelet's Wild Pacific Trail.

Ucluelet's Wild Pacific Trail.

Just offshore from the Wild Pacific Trail near Amphitrite Lighthouse, this small islet holds its own against the open Pacific. A tight stand of conifers — Sitka spruce bent slightly by prevailing winds — crowns the fractured rock, while patches of lichen and coastal scrub fill in below. The swell wraps around both sides, surging through the gaps between rocks before breaking in white foam. The overcast sky flattens the light and gives the scene a moody, elemental quality — green against grey, life against stone.
