Get a Grip

The image reads almost entirely as graphic shape against light. The pale, featureless sky acts as a blank canvas — no clouds, no horizon, no texture — reducing everything to a study in dark form and negative space.

The dead snag is the spine of the composition: a single vertical thrust upward, erupting into a chaos of bare, twisted branches that claw outward in every direction. Each limb is a jagged line, some straight, some curled back on themselves — angular, brittle, unresolved. The tree doesn't taper so much as unravel.

At the apex, the eagle shatters the geometry. Where the tree is all rigid angles and decay, the bird is pure kinetic energy — wings thrown wide, primary feathers splayed like outstretched fingers, the curve of the body caught mid-controlled-fall. The silhouette of those open wings creates a dramatic dark crown above the already-dark tree, doubling the visual weight at the top of the frame.

The talons — rendered as sharp hooks reaching downward — are the moment's punctuation mark. Everything in the image is in motion toward that single point of contact.

Together, dead wood and living bird form one continuous dark mass that rises from the bottom of the frame and explodes upward into the light — a column of stillness meeting a burst of wings.
