The engine was off. We were drifting, watching the pod work — hunting — when he appeared beside us. A large male, his dorsal fin cutting straight up out of the grey water, taller than you expect even when you know what's coming. The eye patch caught for just a moment at the waterline. He wasn't interested in us. He had a hunt to get back to. He passed, and we watched, and said nothing.
